WHITE GOD (Fehér Isten) - Kornél Mundruczo (2014)
Kornél Mundruczó’s fifth film at the Cannes Film Festival 2014 received the prize of the “Un certain regard” [A particular outlook] section.
The basis of White God is a melodrama with a critical attitude to society – just like in my earlier films. On top that layer I built a superstructure, which starts as a family film but then develops into an action film with dogs, and later on into a story of apprenticeship [Bildungsroman] and eventually a thriller of revenge. (…)
White God addresses the question what happens when déclassé elements of society revolt. That is not a dilemma of Hungary alone – it is a dilemma Europe has to think about. It is more likely that such a revolt might happen in a suburb of Paris or London than in Hungary. That’s what makes this film both Hungarian and European – and Western viewers have noticed that.
