4’33” (1952)
Probably the best example of Environmental-Ambient Music. Although perceived as four minutes and thirty-three seconds of silence, it is in fact the sounds heard during the “performance” of this three-movement piece that make it so interesting. Silence played a major role in the compositional style of Cage before 4’33” was written, but there is something utterly interesting about it only being silent on the performer’s part.
