Ms. Hofer, who was born in Germany and lived in New York, Mexico and Switzerland, started out as an apprentice to photographers in Switzerland. She came to New York in 1946, where her editorial career took off. She also befriended painters and artists who “showed me how to look,” according to her 2009 obituary. That attitude translated into her working style, as she used a 4×5 camera that required careful attention and patience. (read more here and here)
