Jacques Prévert: I Am as I Am

I am as I am

I’m made that way

When I feel like laughing

I burst right out

I love the one who loves me

Is it my fault especially

If it’s not the same one

I love each time

Masha Kaléko (1907-1975)

From the poem Mein schönstes Gedicht”

Mein schönstes Gedicht?

Ich schrieb es nicht.

Aus tiefsten Tiefen stieg es.

Ich schwieg es.

Translation:

My best poem ever?

I wrote it never.

From deepest depths uprushed it.

I hushed it.

Sonnet XLIII

What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,

I have forgotten, and what arms have lain

Under my head till morning; but the rain

Is full of ghosts tonight, that tap and sigh

Upon the glass and listen for reply,

And in my heart there stirs a quiet pain

For unremembered lads that not again

Will turn to me at midnight with a cry.

Thus in winter stands the lonely tree,

Nor knows what birds have vanished one by one,

Yet knows its boughs more silent than before:

I cannot say what loves have come and gone,

I only know that summer sang in me

A little while, that in me sings no more.

Was I lost in thoughts of love

When I closed my eyes? He

Appeared, and

Had I known it for a dream

I would not have awakened.

Here I came to the very edge where nothing at all needs saying,...

Here I came to the very edge

where nothing at all needs saying,

everything is absorbed through weather and the sea,

and the moon swam back,

its rays all silvered,

and time and again the darkness would be broken

by the crash of a wave,

and every day on the balcony of the sea,

wings open, fire is born,

and everything is blue again like morning.

“I Like For You To Be Still” by Pablo Neruda

Read by Glenn Close

J’aime ton silence car tu sembles absente,

J’aime ton silence quand tu sembles lointaine.

Laisse-moi me taire dans ton silence .

J’aime ton silence quand tu sembles absente.
